Session Prep Guide

Life is about building relationships and that is the first step in capturing those precious moments. At M&J Photo Studio we provide a fresh approach to family photography and this all starts by getting to know each other. We invite you to the studio for a pre session meeting where we can chat about your ideas our ideas props, clothing and all the other lovely items.

So please tell us about yourselves, how many will be participating, how many weeks, months or years your little ones are. As much we know about you the more connected we are to help bring out those precious moments.

Maternity Session

The best time for your maternity photos to be taken is 32-34 weeks of pregnancy; Right when your tummy is nice and big, after all its the star of the session so we need it not to be shy.

You need to allow for 1-2 hours for your session. Partner, siblings and pets of the new baby are more than welcome to join in. It is also a good idea to book your pregnancy session early on in your pregnancy, to make sure you don't run out of time. Here is a link to Pintrest with some ideas for what to wear to the sessions based on the season. We also have a variety of maternity gows that you are more then welcomed to use.

We also have bump to baby packages for those wanting to book both Pregnancy & Newborn sessions.

New Born Session

It is ideal to make a booking while you are still pregnant, this will allow us to set time aside in our schedule around your due date, and gives us an idea of when to anticipate your baby’s birth.

Once your baby arrives, even if you are still in the hospital, contact us and we will set an exact date for your session.

Newborn photo's are best photographed in the first 3-12 days after birth, when they are still very sleepy and easy to pose. The ideal time is before they are two weeks of age. 5-10 days is just perfect.

This time frame allows us to capture your new arrival in the curly, womb like poses. Once babies get closer to 2 weeks of age, they will go through their first growth spurt, have more awake time and may start to develop baby acne, gassy stomachs, and colic.

You need to allow about 3 to 4 hours for your session. We need this time because your little one is still adjusting to their new world, they will need to feed, to be changed or to be held by mommy so she/he can go back to sleep. And all of this will occur between poses hence the suggested time frame.

Mum, Dad, and siblings of the newborn are welcome to join in on the first or last hour of the session depending on the siblings age. The room will be hot to keep baby warm and relaxed!

If you have stumbled across the idea of newborn portraits after the 12 day mark, do not worry! Older newborns can still be captured in a variety of different ways.

Depending on your baby, we work with their needs and personality to create the most beautiful portraits no matter what age you bring them in at. We have a large range of prop sizes to suit babies of many sizes.

Watch Me Grow

This is a special set of sessions because we document you and your little one(s) first year. The sessions are broken up into 3, first 3month, then 6month and finally their first year.

All three sessions captures that special stage of their lives where they see and experience the world differently and of course we include the family in every one of those stages
